Setting up appropriate equipment

All that was necessary was a camera, tripod and microphone I extended the legs of the tripod to film at eye level and securely attached the camera to the top of the tripod via the threaded bolt and clip. I chose to use an attachable microphone instead of the cameras built in one for a clearer dialog result, setting it up was very simple as all was needed was to clip it to the top of the cameras microphone slot and screw it into place. I put the camera into manual focus so that i could control what was in focus by hand.

Enhancing edit for final draft

The pictures labelled 1 and 2 are the text I added via the text tool, 'The Rehoming' title I added is the name of my trailer and is a crucial part in all horror movies/trailers as it gives insight into what its about. I also added the 'Created by Louie Stirk' just to act almost like a credit so the audience know I made it. Furthermore the picture labelled 3 is the text properties, I used this to customize the style and size of the text, I changed the font to one called 'Impact' which is large and bold meaning its suitable for the horror genre and clear for an audience to see, I also added a shadow in bright red which I felt gave it more depth on the screen whilst also creating more of a sinister feel as red is often associated with horror. Number 4 shows the editing I did to a certain clip in the trailer where there is short quick cuts between black and the video itself to create the effect of there being some sort of signal interception which is common to other horrors and thrillers, I further helped to create this feel by adding an audio effect which sounds like static to the cuts where the screen is black, finally to round it together I added a quite low pitched heart beat which induces fear and suspense for the audience. The image labelled number 5 shows all my edited audio, the blue audio at the top is the original audio of the videos I used however about 80 percent of it I either reduced the volume drastically or just completed removed it all together because of reasons such as poor quality or it just wasn't necessary, The green audio seen at the bottom was effects and music I added during editing which are sounds such as banging, dragging, footsteps, heartbeats etc. Number 6 shows the exponential fade audio transition and number 7 shows the constant gain audio transition, both which I used a number of times throughout to either fade music in or out depending on multiple things like scene changes or audio changes. These effects help the trailer to flow better without having sudden jumps between parts and makes it feel more interlinked as a whole. Finally number 8 is the cross dissolve video transition I used which worked in a way similar to number 6 and 7 transitions, meaning I used it to switch between video clips more gradually to create the flow effect, The use of this transition was also to portray a comparison between the tense scenes where there was quick jumps and the seemingly more relaxed ones where they faded in and out. Overall I kept the editing on the more minimalistic side because I wanted my trailer to feel more raw a real, if I had edited it too much I would have lost the originality and atmosphere that you get from a more low budget home made short trailer.

Improving my draft

The Rehoming offline edit

I felt that my draft film trailer prior to any editing lacked context therefore I aim to film a few more clips to add before just so that it will have a bit more structure. I aim to add a lot of the audio and sound effects whilst editing as the original lacks the atmosphere I'm looking for in a horror trailer, furthermore other things such as people talking in the background and wind have decreased the quality of the original audio. Sound effects I am thinking about using to improve the trailer are thing such as footsteps, dragging, certain car noises like engine start, heartbeat, static etc. Music will be quite prominent as I believe it will be a key part of adding suspense and depth into my trailer whilst keeping it simplistic and not revealing too much. I will crop parts of my videos as some parts are unnecessary or too long and therefore take away from the tense theme I'm aiming for. Other things I would like to add are effects to slightly change exposure of the video clips, this is because a few were filmed at night and are too dark, other effects are things like pitch of the audio clips in order for them to sound scarier to the audience and I will change speed/duration of clips, this will have the effect of almost acting like a jump scare because of how quick the clip is displayed.  Finally a key part of the trailer that is missing and I will add is the title which will display 'The Rehoming', the title is key in any trailer as it gives insight into what the trailer or film is about the majority of the time.

Following safe working practises

Whilst setting up my equipment I followed safe working practices by ensuring tripping hazards such as tables and chairs, tripods were at a safe distance to the side . I had someone at the side of the set to watch over the filming and move or readjust equipment and props that were in incorrect places and therefore could have been a hazard. I checked the functionality of all the equipment such as tripod and camera before filming so that I was sure the equipment was working as intended and therefore couldn't cause issues. I maintained proper posture and didn't position myself in any ways in which I could have been injured or been unstable. Whilst recording the shot of the fire I made sure that the tripod and camera were far enough away that they wouldn't get damaged or heat up warm enough to potentially injure anyone, I also positioned myself in such a way that allowed me to stay safe without sacrificing the quality of the shot.
